Post DC Universe Online
This thread will probably be moved to FotM come November. But still. I've been sort of interested in the game for a few reasons: 1) Playing as a super hero in a game is usually pretty fun for at least a little while 2) Non-fantasy MMOs by major companies are interesting 3) Though I'm not super familiar with the DC Universe, I really like what I *do* know.

So, they released a trailer at ComiCon that's pretty boss. Initially I didn't know what the hub-bub was about, because they first released a *teaser* to their trailer, which is what I saw, and had no VO and was barely a minute long. This full thing is closer to six minutes. It's done by the same company that did both TOR E3 trailers (Blur).

Anyway, it's geeky comic booky goodness, so I thought this forum would dig it.

I don't know what kind of game it will be, but that trailer was cool as hell.

...and I'll look down, and whisper "no."

I really would love to give this game a spin, but I'm worried it's going to be buried by WoW's xpac. Feather and I do have a fondness of the super hero MMO though, although I'm not so sure she would like this one (gameplay looks way more akin to a beatem up than a traditional MMO). The trailer was amazing though.

Definately keeping an eye on it at least.

The gameplay I've seen looks almost identical to what you would see from a COH or CO video. Travel powers that look similar, pick up items and throw them, and I'd wager that there's no real auto attack, and instead just a bunch of abilities.

But overall, I'm with Damon. The bottom line is, the only game that has a chance to be as worthy of my MMO dollar as WoW is going to be TOR, and thats 1) because I'm biased 2) because in TOR's case, my "MMO dollar" would be $0 and 3) Bioware is one of the few real, quality developers out there that is taking a crack at the MMO market.

Or I guess another way to put it: Sone Online doesn't inspire the greatest gameplay / lasting satisfaction confidence when you look at the quantity of MMOs they've released and compare it to the quality. That's not to say they were all busts, but none of them had the content updates or developer devotion that WoW has received, and it showed enough that I would never give them a second look. Much like Cryptic, they're a group that knows how to do a couple of things really well, and they try to capitalize on that as frequently as possible. DC backing or no, five years from now there is a 0% chance that any of us will be talking about the new free content patch raid in DCUO, and how the gear we get from it might carry over into the second expansion that's on the horizon. Possibly even less than 0%.

All that said, CO was worth my $50 for two fun filled weeks, and I could see DCUO being the same. And if CO were more balanced, it could've kept me for another month or two before I left it to return to WoW, so DCUO devs: take note! Unlike FF14, this is a beta I really hope I do get into, because I could see having some fun with it and am very curious to see if things are heading the right direction.

The scary thing about SOE MMOs is that they aren't afraid to do drastic altering of gameplay when they feel that the subscriptions are going down. It sure is fun to be playing one type of game, then when your yearly content patch comes out, you're playing a completely different game from the one before.

While Marvel was saturated with heroes, DC had a unique problem in that most of their heroes were so overpowered or underpowered that it made it tough to come up with reasonable villains. It's why they had such a range between this awesome guy to this awesome guy. From the looks of it though they're going for a new antagonist because I'm sure they wouldn't have many people at the meeting stone for this raid.

Announced less than 24 hours before going live:

And you know what MMO players love? When you drastically alter a minor mechanic of the game, to breathe subtle life into your product. Like combat!
